Byron Scott called for the firing of Bob Ryan yesterday after the Boston Globe sports columnist said on a Boston TV station that he would "like to smack" Jason Kidd's wife.

Michigan May Force Toddler's Surgery
Surgeons say 2-year-old Noshin Hoque will probably die within a year or two unless the tumor growing deep in her brain is removed. But the operation itself will probably kill her or leave her blind or paralyzed.
Given those odds, the little girl's parents, Jalal and Shaheda Hoque, decided not to let doctors operate, and instead started taking her to a Montreal homeopath for herbal and nutritional treatments in hopes of curing her

State ban on gay marriage upheld
Saying state law clearly defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, a Marion County judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit seeking to lift a ban on gay marriages in Indiana.
The Indiana Civil Liberties Union said it will appeal Superior Court Judge S.K. Reid's ruling on the lawsuit, filed in August by three same-sex couples.
"Same-sex couples in a committed relationship are no different than married couples," said ICLU attorney Ken Falk. "The time has come to recognize that."
But Reid ruled that the state is justified in allowing only opposite-sex couples to marry. Such a law, she wrote, "promotes the state's interest in encouraging procreation to occur in a context where both biological parents are present to raise the child."

County to list violent sex predators on Web site
Information about sexually violent predators who move to the Pittsburgh area will be listed on the Internet under a measure approved unanimously by Allegheny County Council.
The state began listing the photographs and addresses of sexually violent predators on the Internet in October. The county's list, to be added to the Allegheny County real estate assessment link, is intended to make it easier for residents to find local convicted offenders.

Kopp Gets Max in Slaying of Abortion Doc
An anti-abortion extremist sentenced today for the 1998 sniper slaying of a Buffalo-area doctor referred to abortion providers as "murderers" who employ "weapons of mass destruction."

During his sentencing today in a Buffalo courtroom, 48-year-old James Kopp said he wished he could "do ten life sentences or ten death penalties to save unborn children.

Study: 'Language police'
harming children

Activist groups acting as "language police" are exerting increasing control over American schools, resulting in bored, cynical and "dumbed down" children, according to a three-year study of education policy.
Diane Ravitch, author of "The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn," notes the classic children's story "The Little Engine That Could" has been banned in some U.S. jurisdictions

Teen pregnancies, abortions lowest in years
The number of teen pregnancies fell to a record low in 1999, and the number of teen abortions fell to a near-record low, according to new national data from the Alan Guttmacher Institute.

Paedophiles to be constantly tracked
PAEDOPHILES are to be tagged and placed under constant 24-hour surveillance using cutting-edge technology which allows police to work out a criminal's exact location anywhere in the UK and prevents sex offenders coming within 300ft of schools and play parks.
The Home Office has thrown its weight behind the plan and a trial of the scheme, proposed by Shy Keenan, an adult survivor of child sex abuse who was also forced to take part in child pornography, is planned for this summer. If tests are successful the tagging and tracking programme will be given the go-ahead by the government.

Blair gives religious employers the right to sack gay workers
Tony Blair was accused of caving in to evangelical Christians last night after it emerged that new government legislation will allow faith schools, churches, hospices and other religious employers to sack lesbian and gay staff.

'Transsexual foster care' bill advances
Prospective foster parents in California will be required to undergo "sensitivity" training toward homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals if a bill that passed the state Assembly yesterday becomes law.
The legislation, approved 46-28 in a party-line vote, also would require foster parent agencies to support homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals as foster parents. It now goes to the state Senate.

Polygamy Czar Forecasts More Prosecutions Soon
Two prosecutions in two years. Ron Barton, Utah's first "polygamy czar," knows it's not much, but he believes more charges are imminent.
Barton is after polygamists who take adolescent brides or cheat the welfare system, and he has spent the past 2 1/2 years painstakingly cultivating sources in their shadowy world. It hasn't been easy -- he is the state's only polygamy investigator, and there are about 30,000 Utahns living in polygamous families.

It's Time for A Separation of Sexuality and State
Well, the one thing that I submit, the Court, the State should not be able to come in to say is we are going to permit ourselves the majority of people in our society full - full and free rein to make these decisions for ourselves but there's one minority of people don't get that decision and the only reason we're going to give you is we want it that way. We want them to be unequal in their choices and their freedoms, because we think we should have the right to commit adultery, to commit fornication, to commit sodomy and the State should have no basis for intruding into our lives but we don't want those people over there to have the same right."

The Claptrap Over Child Porn
Kiddie porn is the most contentious and controversial issue revolving around the subject of sexually explicit material. It's something everyone talks about but few people have actual seen. Concerns seem based more on rumor than reality. Attempts to find child porn are doomed to very little success.
What does seem to attract attention in the US and England is not child porn per se. The bulk of the material that arouses the ire of the anti-porn crowd, and the US Justice Department, is not actually child pornography. I obtained a list of the material that the US government confiscated as child pornography which had been mailed to recipients in the States. The titles of the publications in question were actually quite common in Europe and quite legal. The difference came about because of the American definition of "child".

In the '30s, women in film ruled – until censors took over
Movies of the early 1930s, Jane Fonda declares in "Complicated Women," Turner Classic Movies' new and fascinating documentary, were "glamorous, sophisticated and startlingly frank."
Not only that, they had some wonderful, witty lines, spoken by women, lines that wouldn't be matched for another 30 or 40 years, if ever.
It was the time when Greta Garbo would tell Robert Montgomery in "Inspiration" (1931), "I'm just a nice young woman. Not too young – and not too nice, I hope."

Women With Guns Fight Back
Women need to defend themselves, especially single women or those with husbands overseas. And the media has a responsibility to discuss honestly the issue of gun ownership. The John Walsh Show on NBC may have dealt a blow (4/29) to both goals by "ambushing" three women who agreed to discuss their gun ownership and advocacy on air.

Unrecognized Abuse
In this article I want to talk about something that is not considered to be abuse but actually is. It is a form of abuse that is pernicious and vicious and very, very common. It is a form of abuse that is almost always carried out on men by women. Although there are exceptions to this rule, they are very few indeed. It is also a form of abuse that can have catastrophic effects on children as well as fathers. It is the abuse of men and kids by lying about fathers in order to exclude them from their children's lives or, by threatening to remove the children from the fathers if the mothers wishes are not met.

Feminists Poised to Highjack the Iraqi Reconstruction Effort
Over the years, Iraq has been accused of some of the most shocking human rights violations. These persistent abuses were one of the justifications that President Bush used when he launched Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Once the hostilities ended, President Bush requested a sweeping $2.4 billion humanitarian package to aid in the reconstruction of that country. But if radical feminists get their way, men will be shunted aside by these humanitarian relief efforts.

U.S. Is 11th in Mother's Day Rankings
In honor of Mother's Day, Save the Children released its annual Mothers' Index of the best and worst places to be a mother around the world. The relief agency is also supporting legislation to protect women and children in war-torn regions

Sports News Shortchanges Female Players, Fans
When it comes to coverage of women's professional sports in this day of dazzling female athletes, I think of the poignant Peggy Lee song and have to ask, "Is that all there is?"

'Willmar 8' Earn Rank as Equal-Pay Pioneers
The 'Willmar 8' made a courageous contribution to the women's equal-pay movement when they conducted one of the first gender-discrimination strikes 25 years ago in Minnesota.

Less Childcare for Harder Working Poor
In the past two years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have cut child care access for low-income families. Meanwhile, the Bush administration calls on states to require more welfare recipients to work and for longer hours.

New Federal Judges Likely to Curtail Women's Rights
Bush's nominees for lifetime appointments to the federal bench have records on such issues as reproductive health and workplace rights that suggest their tenure in the federal courts could dramatically alter women's lives for decades.

$34 Million Friends Campaign Expands to Europe
A grass-roots campaign led by two women is aiding the leading international reproduction-health group, which lost all its U.S. funding last summer after a damaging anti-choice report whose findings were not officially corroborated.

Rana Husseini's consistent reporting of honor crimes in Jordan has put violence against women on the public agenda in this country and has earned her many awards for her courage, including Women's eNews' Ida B. Wells Award for Bravery in Journalism.

Israelis fire on hospital, use women and kids as shields
Five Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank and Gaza Strip yesterday, with troops accused of firing on a hospital and using women and children as human shields in one incident.

A 12-year-old boy was shot in the head in the grounds of the main hospital in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, as troops fired on a nearby house where fighters were holed up, an AFP correspondent and a Palestinian medical source reported

Gender Equity in Workplace Slow for Women
Employment and gender equity in the workplace is moving at a snail's pace, the Commission on Gender Equity (CGE) said in Parliament today.
Addressing the parliamentary portfolio committee on labour at the end of two days of public hearings on employment equity, CGE commissioner Themba Kgasi said companies had a tendency to compile an employment equity plan, but did not comply with the Employment Equity Act
