Anglican leaders: No backing of rites for same-sex ties
''The question of public rites for the blessing of same-sex unions is still a cause of potentially divisive controversy,'' primates of the 38 national churches and provinces said in a statement following their meeting in Gramado in southern Brazil.
''The archbishop of Canterbury spoke for us all when he said that it is through liturgy that we express what we believe and that there is no theological consensus about same-sex unions. Therefore, we as a body cannot support the authorization of such rites,'' said their statement, released by the Anglican Communion office in London.
Anti-prostitution statute may draw lawsuits, city told
Houston City Council on Wednesday passed an anti-prostitution ordinance -- which many acknowledge is unconstitutional on its face -- after the Legal Department warned there is a strong chance it will be challenged.
Under the ordinance, effective within five days, any officer may arrest a "known prostitute" -- someone convicted of prostitution within the last year -- for loitering in a public place with the intent to commit prostitution, demonstrated by enticing, soliciting or procuring someone.
"This ordinance makes it a crime for looking like you want to proposition someone for sex," said Annette Lamoreaux, East Texas regional director for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Two frozen embryos put inheritance law to test
The dry law of wills and probate has been put to a very modern test, with the NSW Supreme Court asked to determine whether two frozen embryos, and their live siblings, should share in their grandmother's estate.
The case has revealed shortcomings in inheritance laws, and a need for guidelines for solicitors drafting wills where future births are an issue.
The action, heard by the Chief Judge in Equity, Justice Peter Young, was brought by the children's father over the correct interpretation of the will, and the definition of the word "survive".
'Masculinists' lashing back at feminists?
Feminists fret the tables have turned. But have they?
A report funded by the Canadian government finds "masculinists" are orchestrating a backlash against feminism and blame women for oppression and discrimination against men, reports the National Post.
According to the paper, the report's authors claim "masculinists" portray men as victims and link feminism with boys' poor performance in schools, male suicide, loss of male identity and discriminatory divorce and child-custody laws. It further concludes that "masculinists" aim to discredit feminism and challenge the gains made by women in education, work and in family life.
Disabled rape victim's baby aborted
The Miami Herald reports the abortion was completed last evening, without complication, and the mother, a 28-year-old mentally disabled woman who was raped at a group home for women with disabilities, is recovering well. Detectives from the Miami-Dade Police Department took custody of a sample of the aborted baby to help them identify the father and build a criminal case against him.
Men ignored in domestic violence cases
Men ignored in domestic violence cases Several Norwegian defense attorneys claim that too much weight is put on the testimony of women in domestic violence cases. Men are often victims of miscarriage of justice because their stories are often not given credibility, newspaper Dagbladet reports
Florida Repeals 'Scarlet Letter Law'
Gov. Jeb Bush signed a repeal Friday of the "Scarlet Letter Law" that requires mothers to publish their sexual histories in the newspaper if they want to put a child up for adoption and do not know the father.
The repeal bill, which passed both houses of the Legislature unanimously, instead establishes a paternity registry where men who believe they have fathered a child can enroll so they can be contacted if the child is offered for adoption.
Archdiocese issues child-protection policy
The new guidelines, titled ''Policies and Procedures for the Protection of Children,'' are based on broad principles adopted in November by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and approved by the Vatican. The church leaders acted in response to the scandal, which ultimately revealed a pattern of abusive priests being transferred to other parishes or dioceses and resulted in the resignation of Cardinal Bernard F. Law. Every diocese in the United States is supposed to issue similar policies
Gays, lesbians lash out at church
Gay and lesbian groups said yesterday that the Catholic Church, under siege for the clergy abuse scandal, lacks the moral authority to mobilize parishioners against same-sex marriage. They are urging parishioners to walk out of services if priests voice the church's opposition to same-sex unions and to boycott church collections.
Sexist Icelandair advertising tries women's patience
Icelandic women may pride themselves on their cool patience, but national airline Icelandair has finally pushed them past the tolerance limit with advertising they perceive as sexist and degrading
Perhaps it was the new game on the airline's website in which points are scored by snatching the bikini tops off giggling girls that brought the rage to a Geyser-like eruption.
U.S. Wants Court Out of Abortion Case
The Bush administration urged the Supreme Court to reject a politically charged abortion case that seeks free-speech protection for protesters who used "wanted" posters to target doctors.
The administration said the court should leave undisturbed a ruling against anti-abortion protesters for listing personal information about abortion clinic employees on the Internet and on posters.
Rudolph pleads innocent in Alabama bombing
Olympic bombing suspect Eric Rudolph pleaded innocent Tuesday in a deadly blast at a Birmingham abortion clinic.
Rudolph, wearing a red jail shirt and pants with his feet shackled but his hands free, pleaded innocent before federal Magistrate Judge Michael Putnam for the 1998 bombing of New Woman All Women Health Care, where an off-duty police officer was killed and a clinic nurse critically injured. He could face the death penalty.
Affirmative action grading
Dr. Mike S. Adams, an associate professor of criminal justice at University of North Carolina's Wilmington campus, has given me an excellent idea for grading students, which appeared in his commentary in the Web-based Agape Press newswire. For 35 years, I've taught economics and graded students on the racist, culturally biased standards of individual performance. In today's America, that's unfair and insensitive.
Child Use
It's for the children."
All of us hear that all the time. Many who say and repeat it are honest in their care and concern. Many others are sincere in their intent to use children to further some favorite cause of their own regardless of the impact on children.

How Abortion Politics Impedes Clear Thinking on Other Issues Involving Fetuses
So long as Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land, the culture war over abortion will continue to focus on side issues--such as parental consent laws for minors seeking abortions, grisly methods of late-term abortion, and the extent, and limits, of the free speech rights of anti-abortion protesters.

Sexy Manifesto
A few days ago someone I know called me a "hypocrite" because I like to dress attractively and can be openly sexual in my performance with the band, but claim to be a feminist. (This same person runs around in halter tops and miniskirts and does a zine largely comprised of collages from old porno mags, which is somehow okay. But that's not what I'm here to talk about.)

Bridal Media Promote Merchandise, not Marriage
It's June. Wedding bells ring. Dewey-eyed brides float down the aisles in strapless gowns. Hovering over it all, meanwhile, is a pushy bridal media, focused on the union of mating to materialism, not wife to husband
Foe of Coed Military to Lead Sexual Assault Panel
Anita K. Blair, founder of the conservative Independent Women's Forum and prominent opponent of gender-integrated military training, will lead the independent review panel to investigate Air Force Academy sexual assaults, reports The Denver Post.
Blair, former chair of Commission on Military Training and Gender-Related Issues, was against admitting women to the Virginia Military Institute in 1997 and, in a report filed in 1999, argues that the military should not be changed to make it more accessible to women, but that recruiting policies should be changed to assure more "combat and general-replacement" male personnel.

Bush 'killing women' with pro-life aid
THOUSANDS of African women are being condemned to death because of America’s refusal to give any aid money to health workers giving abortion advice, it was claimed last night.
Health workers and human rights campaigners are furious at American government policy which prevents overseas family planning aid going to any organisation that offers women abortion counselling, provides abortion services or campaigns for a change in abortion laws.

Some customers complained that they were offended by covers that feature scantily dressed models and headlines about sex tips.
FCN Editorial - Reclaiming our girls and young women
Recent video news footage of young Black girls with bats smashing an automobile at a gas station was shocking. It was followed days later by the now infamous hazing footage of White high school girls in Illinois smearing feces on graduating juniors and bashing them across the head with their fists and other objects.
These images should send a chilling message to this society, but it also is an example of what’s happening to youth in this America as a whole.
