Laila Ali

June 27, 2003 11:05 PM posted by kerri : track it (0)

Laila Ali holds three titles:
The International World Boxing Federation Super Middle Weight Champ, The International Boxing Association Super Middle Weight Champ, and
The Womens International Boxing Association Super Middle Weight Champ. Though she may be best known for being the daughter of Muhammad Ali, she clearly holds her own in the ring. Athough she only began boxing in 1999, she has an amazing record of15 wins, 0 losses.

Ali, born in 1977, earned a degree in business before deciding to become a professional boxer. She has already won recognition in over 20 major publications.

This just goes to show that athletic women are not relegated to non-contact sports.

In no way do I mean to demean her athletic accomplishments, for Laila Ali truly is a good athlete, I simply wonder if she would have received as much media recognition and sponsership if she wasn't as attractive as she is. She's a very attractive woman and I think that is another reason she's viewed with some wonder in our media: she's a beautiful woman in an oft-times bloody, full contact sport. I wonder this because of another athlete, Anna Kournikova (sp?), who is ranked something like 40th in the world but is one of the top ten money-earners due to all the sponserships she gets because she is young and physically attractive. Any comments along this line of thought?

As a long time martial artist, it's nice to see women get recognition for contact sports. But I do agree with Anna. She would not have gotten the recognition if she was not who she is, both beautiful and Muhammed Ali's daughter. A prime example is Cynthia Rothrock, who has acted in countless martial arts movies. She did mostly Spanish movies until she had a nose job, and then has done minor roles in Chuck Norris Films, etc. She's got the body but not the beautiful face, and no name other than her talent. And talent she does have. Check out Lady Dragon.
