U.S. upholds affirmative action
Giving preference to students on the basis of race is justified as long as the aim is diversity and the admissions process does not automatically favour a minority applicant, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled yesterday in a pair of split decisions that reflect a sharply divided court and a nation still struggling with its racial fault line
USA's women have 'a new set of priorities,' poll suggests
What are women's top concerns? A poll released today by a women's advocacy group says worries about domestic violence and sexual assault come in way ahead of preserving abortion rights.
The poll also finds that motherhood, although important, is not a must for a complete life. And although most women want a man in their lives, it's not for the traditional reasons: They want his love and affection much more than his paycheck
Men 'set to outlive women'
Men could soon live longer than women, according to experts.
They believe high levels of smoking, drinking and stress may eventually take their toll on women's life spans.
The researchers believe that if current trends continue men born in this century will outlive their female counterparts.
Sexual inequality exposed in virtual world
Female virtual characters suffer from sexual inequality in financial matters, just like their real-world counterparts, according to a new study of the online game EverQuest.
EverQuest is inhabited by tens of thousands of internet gamers at any one time. Players choose a character to represent them in the role-playing world. These avatars can be male or female and one of many fantasy races such as elf or ogre. Once a character has built up experience and skills, some players then sell them for real cash through the internet auction site eBay.
Proliferating Iranian weblogs give voice to taboo topics
In a recent entry, LadySun - the handle used by a feisty online diarist - takes aim at the strict dress code for women, grumbling about a guard who wouldn't let her into a hotel, "cuz I wasn't wearing socks!!"
It is easy to see why she is celebrated by her fans as the "emotional voice of Iran's Generation X." Whether the subject is partying or politics, football or feminism, she writes with feeling, and often humor.

Panel: Let CPS force services on parents
The parents of a Phoenix boy found locked in a closet earlier this month were offered counseling and parenting classes by Child Protective Services seven times in four years.
But the state agency can't demand that parents participate in services without first taking the dramatic step of removing their children, and 7-year-old Isaac Loubriel was never taken away.
One of the recommendations in a draft report by Gov. Janet Napolitano's commission on CPS would force parents to participate in services or risk losing custody of their children.
One vote passes sex law
Politicians have voted to decriminalise prostitution.
In a narrow vote yesterday, they approved a new law allowing the running of brothels and soliciting.

Anti-abortion activists' appeal rejected
The Supreme Court turned back an appeal today from anti-abortion protesters facing a multimillion dollar judgment for targeting clinic doctors with "wanted" posters.
The court had been asked to give free-speech protection to the activists, but the Bush administration discouraged justices from taking the case.
Physicians sued, claiming they feared for their lives after being listed on a round of Old-West style wanted posters and having their personal information put on the Internet. Three doctors who had been featured on posters were killed.

Inequality is the result of 'natural differences' between the sexes, according to a controversial new survey carried out by Britain's top equality watchdog. And many Britons believe that women receive low pay and perform a larger domestic role through choice, not discrimination
US Sodomy Laws overturned
On June 30, 1986, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that a Georgia state law which specified that sodomy1 was a crime punishable by between one month and twenty years in prison was constitutionally permissable, dismissing claims that such a law violated the privacy rights of those engaging in sodomy as being obviously invalid on the grounds that "Proscriptions against that conduct have ancient roots."
What Do Our Women Want?
Are women unfairly treated in Saudi Arabia? The West I lived in and have been communicating with for years takes this as a fact. Women’s rights organizations, human rights groups and the media demand that our women be able to decide and plan their own life and future. They object to restrictions on the extent to which men and women can mix in society, the restriction on their ability to travel and marry without family permission, driving, career opportunities....

As the Catholic Church struggles with its sex-abuse scandal, German theologian Ida Raming--who received what authorities called an illicit ordination last year--calls her excommunication fraudulent and presses the cause of women in the priesthood

On July 8th, All My Children's lesbian teenager Bianca will be raped by the show's current villian, Michael Cambias--at least, this is the rumor (nicknamed "Voldemort" on the Television Without Pity boards to mean "the storyline that shall not be named") that has been swirling around the internet for the last several weeks.

Tech camps inspire girls but may not narrow growing gender gap
Lizzy Serrano wants to design black skateboard sneakers so cool that fellow eighth graders would gladly fork over $40 to buy them.
Her "Half-Pipes'' would feature side pockets for laces because few self-respecting middle schoolers bother to tie bows. They'd include an overstuffed foam tongue -- an antidote to the complaints of hipsters who wedge tube socks into Vans and Converses to give them a fashionable puffiness.
Great idea, especially for a 12-year-old, who might make it big one day as a marketing consultant to the likes of Nike.

Hepburn classic feminist: independent, feminine
IF MOVIE STARS can be role models, then Katharine Hepburn was mine. I loved that old girl from the first time I laid eyes on her. There was something about her that rang true to me and to a generation of girls like me. She was tough, independent, strong-willed and humorous, yet feminine and, yes, sexy.
