The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Tuesday ruled that gay and lesbian couples have the right to marry under the state constitution. By a vote of 4-3, the ruling declared that "barring an individual from the protections, benefits and obligations of civil marriage solely because that person would marry a person of the same sex violates the Massachusetts Constitution."

Women's Rights Leaders Support Current Judicial Filibusters
Women's rights leaders joined women Senators and Senator Tom Daschle (D-ND) today at a press conference at the Capitol supporting current filibusters against anti-women nominees. The press conference follows a 39-hour debate on judicial nominations led by Republican Senators in an attempt to force votes on some of President Bush's most extreme nominees. "We stand proudly with these champions of women's rights-the Senators who have worked literally night and day to block the stacking of the Federal Courts of Appeals with reactionary nominees," said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority.
Afghan Minister Says Constitution Lacks Essential Women's Rights Language
Afghanistan's State Minister of Women's Affairs, Mahbuba Hoquqmal, said that the draft constitution released last week does not do enough to guarantee women's rights. Hoquqmal has suggested changes to the constitution that would guarantee and protect women's rights such as using the term "men and women" instead of the word "citizen" because some Afghan men do not see their wives as citizens of Afghanistan Hoquqmal wants to add a sentence to the preamble that says that Afghan adopted a constitution with the aim of "securing equal rights for women and men and eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women," reports the Associated Press. In addition, Hoquqmal is also urging that two women, not one, should represent each province in the lower house and that women should be guaranteed representation in provincial assemblies and local councils.

"The tree is so animated, reaching to all corners of the picture," Pinney said. "Many people say it has a fairy-tale quality to it. The girls are 'living' in the tree."
