Some Americans are just more Equal than others...

So with Osama on the loose, our schools crumbling and America not bothering to read books or take science classes anymore, our Senate is talking about... Gay Marriage. I know I'm terminally thirilled - so how do you all feel about it? Is this only a gay woman's issue, or should all feminists be concerned? How do you feel about it - infuriated? Invigorated? Bored? Inspired? Talk to me!

My reaction is up here.

I am very much in favor of same-sex marriage rights, though this is something that I would probably never take advantage of because of how I feel about marriage in general. It irks me when hetero feminists treat this as a gay-women-only issue, as it seems to be another way for some to separate themselves from the lesbians they do not want to be identified with. But, accepting gay marriage is just one of the ways this country needs to grow up.

What about the potential economic implications due to abuse of the system, i.e. 2 heterosexual females or males getting married simply for the benefits (tax breaks, insurance coverage, etc...) Although I am not against Gay marriage, these things have to be considered.

It will be quite a while before gay marriage becomes accepted enough for someone to "take advantage of it". In the mean time, if the two are sharing a residence, what's the difference? The prospect of having to divorce to move on with their lives is more than enough to deter this kind of abuse. And it is, after all, illegal to falsify a government document, so this is a non-issue.
