Women and Wheels
How come Helen Keller couldn't drive?
Because she was female.
That was a "joke" that a 16-year old male told me a few days ago. He thought it was hilarious. He does not even have his license yet.
Males have higher insurance rates than females. They get into more fatal accidents. But, the stereotype of women as bad drivers persists. This "joke" (offensive on several levels) is evidence of that.
A teenager told the "joke," but I have heard MANY men comment about female drivers.
What is up with this garbage?

The thing in is our house, I'm the only one that can drive. My husband can't, due to medical reasons. If I didn't drive, we'd all have to take the bus. And since we live outside of the bus routes, that's not happening.
I guess the bad female driver stereotype comes from the cautiousness of females as they try to avoid everything that you've mentioned. Cautious equales bad in some frames of mind I guess.
I had a peer do a great skit on this once, acting out an experience he had - he was driving, bitching about how he has it so bad as a young male driver and ended up in a ditch. He then realized why he had it so bad.
Interesting topic!
Honestly? I remember as a child reading old comic strips or watching Warner Bros. cartoons from the 50's where there was fun made of women drivers and thinking, "That's weird. Why would they think women couldn't drive?" It was as removed from my contemporary reality as if the jokes were about how crazy it was that someone thought the world was round and how they'd get a comeuppance when they fell off the edge. Puzzling.
I've still never heard in my regular life (that is, not secondhand from someone else) anyone making a comment singling out females as bad drivers, that I can recall. I've heard plenty about old ladies being bad drivers, but with a pronounced emphasis on the "old" - making fun of drivers who have slower reaction times, poorer vision, and higher anxiety at high speeds because of the aging process. Is the perception of women as poor drivers really still out there? Should we even have to bother to feel defensive about a belief that's so obviously and objectively incorrect?

At least where I live, there are lots of people who claim that women are bad drivers. There is this stereotype that women drive around putting on mascara, screaming at their kids, and talking on the cell phone while behind the wheel. All of these things are dangerous, but men do really bizarre things while driving as well, so I'm not sure why women are being singled out.
Obviously this is not the most pressing issue, but it is annoying to hear such myths tossed around like truth. With this particular "joke", the impression that someone is going to make fun of a blind person is just as offensive as ridiculing women's driving abilities.
Hmm - I can see how my comment sounded attacking, and I'm sorry for that. I shouldn't have suggested that it wasn't worth considering or writing about; I guess I'm just surprised that such an outdated idea lingers, since I fortunately haven't been confronted with it very often.

It didn't sound attacking at all. I'm becoming more and more a believer that there are regional differences, that's all.

It's a stereotype designed to discourage women from learning to drive and leaving their families. I know it sounds weird at this stage in our culture, but I live in an extremely rural area where women are discouraged from learning to drive by local religious trends. Many also don't cut their hair, or wear slacks, but that's for another post. If a woman doesn't drive, it makes her extremely dependent. She's less likely to leave an abusive husband, can't work, can't shop without help from someone else. It's a trend that's dying, but as you've noticed, it has had its effect on popular culture.
It makes no sense, any more than the idea that most astronauts have been male, even though scientists themselves have always known that women are better suited to space travel than men.

I guess my initial reaction as it was when reading this post was, huh and why is that even funny? I think it's just plain stupid...and wonder if this kid even knows who Helen Keller is, or that she was BLIND... he apparently is...it sounds like this kid is asking to be taken to task on this one...
