women and the election
Will women decide this next election? And if so, for whom will they decide? An article on NPR this morning said that Bush is winning the women's vote, in particular in the Bible thumping swing states like Ohio, where they are coming out in droves to vote for Bush because he is against gay marriage.
A USA Today poll breaks it down thusly and calls it The 'marriage gap':
| Bush | Kerry | Dem Advantage | |
| Married women | 54% | 41% | -13 |
| All women | 45% | 50% | +5% |
| Unmarried women | 35% | 60% | +25 |
| Marriage gap: | +38 | ||
| Source: gallup Polls from March-August 2004, including a total of 5,757 women who are registered voters,. Margin of error: +/- 2 percentage points. | |||
This again, points to many of the swing states where there are more married than unmarried women. The questions are:

bush may be carrying *most* of ohio, but i sincerely doubt he'll carry columbus. this is a weird state. most of ohio is republican, but columbus is nothing but flaming liberals. at least until you get into the 'burbs.
there have been so many pro-kerry bumper stickers, just everywhere. kerry signs in people's windows. so on and so forth.

Of course it worries me. I don't know what else to say; data like that freaks me out and I'm not sure what to do about it.

It makes me want to cry, is what it does, really. That the specific reason cited for Bush would be getting women's votes is because he is against marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Some small part of my intellect understands the origins of that mentality. Some large part of my emotions doesn't, at all. I'm hormonal and the emotions are winning right now.

I left my own comments here. I cheated and left basically the same post on my weekly Tuesday Newsday meme, so I could kill two birds with one stone. Now I have to get back and answer the last WHB topic, which I HAVE been meaning to!!!

This info distresses me a lot. The only thing I can think for us to do is to get out there and talk to our friends/fellow classmates/family members about the issues that will effect them in the upcoming election. the reason I was never interested in politics when I was younger was because I didn't think it effected me. Now I know better.

Bush is hell-bent on getting very conservative judges nominated for the Supreme Court, so of course this worries me. A re-election of Bush could change the course of the next 60 years. At the end of that time, I will be 83; both of my maternal grandparents had passed away by this age (my father was adopted, so I am not sure as the status of my paternal grandparents). Those 60 years could be the remainder of my siblings, my friends, and my own life.
