What She Said!

September 23, 2004 08:17 PM posted by morgaine : track it (0)

Hey, everyone-

This is half collab topic, half announcement. I've started a project called What She Said! that is an attempt to create a master blogroll of Progressive Women Bloggers. I'm a little tired of hearing that there aren't many women blogging. Let me tell you, I can't believe how many we are!

I hope all of you will send me your links. The only criteria is that the blog must be by a woman, or if it's a group blog, one woman must be included. The blog has to deal with politics at least part-time, lean Left, and uphold general Feminist standards: pro-choice, size acceptance, pay equity, etc.

I know I don't have everyone yet, so send them in! Also, fill out the 6 profile questions so I can introduce you on the blog.

Finally - have you ever experienced discrimination in the blogosphere? When, where and what kind? Do you feel women bloggers are treated differently? Share your experiences here, and the next time some guy asks you where all the women bloggers are, tell him What She Said!

This is such a great idea. With so many new blogs to read, I'm going to have to make a 'feminists' folder on Bloglines to hold them all.

As for sexism in the blogosphere, I made a couple of posts touching on that back in the summer. Mainly about how I don't think of myself as belonging to the 'blogosphere' as much as to an unjustly overlooked, female-dominated tradition of diary-writing.

I'll send you some links (those you don't already have). One question that wasn't easily answered from the WSS site - are you looking for things that would be strictly defined as blogs, or would sites like livejournals that tend to blur the lines between blog and journal be accepted, too?

The rule is that it has to be written by at least one woman, have a feminist slant/liberal values, and have some political content. Some of them are diaries that just touch on politics or even religion as it relates to society. I'm not being really strict - as long as it's a woman writing regularly and she isn't anti-choice or Republican - meaning pro-Bush - put her on the list. Anybody talking about Feminist issues that we do here would quality.

I am really impressed by the collection of blog links Morgaine already has posted on the site. I think that there is this obvious assumption made that female bloggers are just placing their diaries online, whereas males get to be "pundits" etc, where their writings are believed to hold credibility, even if they have no more credentials than Bill O'Reilly. Women are viewed as caring only about trifles, and way too often, I have experienced and witnessed female bloggers get attacked on a personal level, rather than have a particular idea critiqued. For some reason there are people who think it's okay to guess about a woman's absolutely personal life, which is something I do not see occuring anywhere near as much to male bloggers.

Finally got this one up here.

Basically, I answered Morgaine's six questions. And Morgaine, I'd like to be added to your list. Please consider my post to be my entry. What She Said has been added to my BlogRoll also. Great list of women bloggers!!!
