Cardinal Pell bans liberal Catholic conference
In the latest installment in the deepening ideological schism within the Catholic Church in Australia, the conservative Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell has banned a group of liberal Catholics from conducting a conference on church property.

The annual conference of the group, Australian Reforming Catholics, was to have gone ahead next month at McKillop Place at North Sydney, a venue run by the Sisters of St Joseph.

But on learning of the gathering, Cardinal Pell is said to have ordered two Sydney priests not to attend and moved to prevent the Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn Pat Power celebrating mass at the conference.

A woman runs for office in Saudi Arabia
Last week, the 37-year-old architect and mother of two made a bid to clear the air with a daring step of her own: She declared herself a candidate for elected office - the first woman in Saudi history to do so.
"I wish there were more [women] so it wouldn't seem so abnormal," she says, admittedly nervous about her gambit. "I'm a patriotic woman who just wants to serve my community and my country."

Debate on Naming Rape Accusers Continues
A columnist for the Poynter Institute has resigned over a decision by the institute delete the name of the Kobe Bryant's accuser in her column. The resulting uproar has caused many to look once again at how the media handles sexual assault cases.

Kobe Owes an Apology to All U.S. Women
Ask a woman if she has ever been raped, and often she says, 'Well . . . not really. In that silence between the 'well' and the 'not really,' she has just measured what happened to her against every rape case she ever heard about and decided she would lose in court."
The woman who accused Bryant of raping her doesn't have to wonder, for in his well-crafted apology the basketball star finally admitted that "she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did . . . I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."
This came after she had decided that she had already lost in the court of public opinion, and said she would not testify about what happened on June 30, 2003 in that hotel room in Colorado. The prosecution dropped the case.

Just over a hundred Muslim girls are still refusing to remove their headscarf when they arrive for classes, French Education Minister Francois Fillon said Sunday in a first assessment of the impact of the ban on religious signs in state schools.
"Last year there were a little over 1,500 girls who wore headscarves throughout the school year. There were 635 cases at the start of classes this year, and after a period of dialogue 534 of them have since agreed to remove it," Fillon said on Europe 1 radio.

Media Need to Move On
The media ignore the difference between real grassroots organizations and smear-happy front groups – the difference, say, between MoveOn and MoveOnForAmerica.

Kerry's message misses women
Combined, Kerry's apparent loss of support among women and Bush's ability to hold men's support help explain why the president had the edge as of mid-September in most of the states that will decide the election.
The main reason for the drop-off in support for Kerry: Women, particularly married women with children, saw Bush as a stronger protector against terrorism.
“Bush is doing the best he can,” said Janet Williams, 50, an operating-room secretary from Fenton, Mo. “Kerry would not be as aggressive. I don't feel much strength coming from him. Terrorists would feel they have more of an edge with Kerry.”

Playing 'Boy' Games Helps Girls, and Vice Versa
Ten-year olds who spend more time engaging in activities typically associated with their gender tend to have more stereotypical academic interests, skills and characteristics two years later, new research reports.
For instance, girls who logged many hours on "girl" activities like reading, knitting, dancing or playing with dolls tended to get better grades in English, show more signs of sensitivity, and were more likely to have low self-esteem, which is more common in girls, the Pennsylvania-based researchers noted.
However, girls who spent more time on sports -- a traditionally masculine pursuit -- tended to become more interested in math two years later, regardless of their interest in math at age 10.

LRA Target Girls
The leader of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) Joseph Kony, has ordered his officers to abduct young girls and take them to him in Sudan, the army has said.
