update!

Thanks for weighing in on the whole should we-shouldn't we question for WHB. I'm making a command decision to turn WHB into a LiveJournal community, now found here: _wehavebrains_ if you're on LJ. Please come visit!

What this means:
- It'll be really easy for those of you who have LJ's to read and post, and to raise questions.
- If you don't have an LJ, you'll still be able to read and comment as you always have.
- The email notify list will go away (bummer).
- But so will all the heinous comment spam I'm always struggling to keep up with (YAY!).
- I'm also going to work on using RSS feed to have the community's contents on wehavebrains.com. Not sure how and when that will happen, but stay tuned.

Thanks to those of you who weighed in saying you don't want the site to die, and special thanks to Lisa for being the one non-slacker (myself included) for the past several months with her Grrrly News posts.

death to WHB?
posted by april : link : track it (0) : read comments (7) : post comment

This site's been totally inactive since sometime in November, and I have to wonder whether it's still useful to readers/posters to maintain.

That is, given the prevalence of other fora for feminist discussion, it seems less useful than it was when I started it 2-3 years ago (back in the day when you could count the feminist bloggers you knew on your fingers and toes). Should I get rid of it? Or is there some other incarnation in which it might serve a meaningful purpose?

Discuss.

technical note...

All comments from the anti-feminist troll who posted wildly off-topic rants and other BS on the site this week have been deleted. Replies to his comments were also deleted, as they don't really make any sense without the originals.

Argument on feminism is welcome, but belongs on the messageboard (see "ask a question" link) if you can't manage to relate to the topic being discussed.

beware... site ugliness coming
posted by april : link : track it (0) : read comments (3) : post comment

I'm making some minor but helpful changes* to the site over the next week. In the meantime, there may be brief periods when the site is ugly or working funkily. Bear with me; the problems should be temporary.

* Adding threaded comments (Livejournal-style) and recoding the site in CSS (also changing the colors, because that made recoding it more fun).

seen any weird comments lately?

We got a run of spam commenters last week (we'd been getting them before, but slowly enough that I caught them individually).

We have MT-Blacklist installed on the site, which is designed to prevent known comment spammers from bugging us, but doesn't catch ones that aren't already known about. So... If you're a member of the staff who gets these comments emailed to you - or just a concerned viewer - and you see a number of these, just let me know. Please don't delete them; I'll make sure they get added to our "blacklist" of evil schmoes who can't post on the site.

a reminder on proper posting
posted by april : link : track it (0) : read comments (2) : post comment

I've tried addressing off-topic, general issue debates by talking to some of you guys individually. Kerri's tried reminding you to take your off-topic conversations to the messageboard, which is a great place to have generalized discussions, and to post your longer, vaguely-related-to-topic comments on your own blogs. Several posters have raised concerns about what amounts to name-calling.

And yet. It still seems like we have a few "behavior problems" (which I am not blaming on any specific individuals, by the way).

Okay, kids. Here's the deal. I believe some of you are honestly not getting it, not through any malice or stupidity on your part, but just because you don't. Whatever we say on the topic of proper posting isn't communicated as well as it could be.

To clarify...

An off-topic comment that responds not to the original question itself or to the content of someone else's comment, but to an unrelated element of someone else's comment or the question. The proper way to address these sorts of comments is via email or on the messageboard.

A general issue debate is one with no bearing on any given post at all. These should only be addressed on the messageboard.

A long comment (really anything more than a paragraph or so), even if relevant, is probably best posted on your own blog and summarized in your comments here - just for the sake of readability.

Namecalling is anything where you blame someone else for a problem, deny the possibility that their opinion is valid, or in any other way act like a middleschooler. This isn't tolerable in any form on this site, but you're more than welcome to take that shit to your own blog.

From this point forward, I will be pruning comments for you, if you can't regulate yourselves. This site is designed to facilitate discussion, not debate (the former is about listening without an agenda, by the way). I hate to edit out your thoughts, because I think they're valid, but if you don't contribute them in appropriate language or location, they'll be deleted or edited - if edited, I will always call out the edits.

If you have issue with any of your posts being deleted, you may take this up with me - via email only.

Enough said.

new blood?

Hey everyone! First, let me apologize loudly and sincerely for drifting off from this site over the past month. Between work and art and a dab of general laziness, I've been offline more than online.

Trust me, none of that is a reflection on this community in any way. And thanks to the remaining staff (especially Kerri - thanks a million!) for carrying on as you do so well.

Anyhow - while gone, it occured to me that it might make things a little more interesting to add some fresh new blood to the "staff" (aka people allowed to post things to this site other than comments). So I'm taking "applicants", as it were. If you're interested, email me at april at red polka dot org and tell me what you'd be interested in doing. Requirements are only that you be a reader and regular contributor.

We've got a real message board now. It'll get more polished-looking soon, but in the meantime it'll be much easier to post random comments, suggestions - and of course - reading recommendations and books to share.

Hope you enjoy it!

After a bit of struggle, we have the site back up and operational. We've lost nearly all of our old posts, topics & such, but the staff will be working to recover what we can of that over the next few weeks.

If you'd like to get the weekly topics in your inbox, PLEASE sign up on the notify list (to your left), whether you had done so on the old site or not.

And pass along the news!

back in action soon!

We Have Brains has finally landed on its new server (huzzah!). It's slow, because it's currently loading data from a database on my other site. I just really wanted something to be here.

Most of our archives are gone, but we'll be bringing the site back up sometime in the next two weeks.

If you want to keep in touch in the meantime, go ahead and sign up on our notify list! And you can stop by and say hello to the staff:
April : Red Polka
Kerri : Some Grrrls
Roni : Goddess Musings
Alison : Heavenly Ginger
Lauren : Orbitzchan
Lisa : Pixiepuff
